[2020/06/24] NYMU and ASUS AICS Promotes the “Hua Yang Project” that will Cultivate Taiwan’s Smart Healthcare Professionals

ASUS Intelligent Cloud Service Center (AICS) and National Yang-Ming University have teamed up to develop the “Hua Yang Project” Industry-University Cooperation Research and Development Center. The signing of the MOU took place on May 19th, 2020.

It is highly anticipated that artificial intelligence in medicine will become more effective at analyzing medical big data and thus help create a diversified and more valuable care system. The ASUS Intelligent Cloud Service Center (AICS) announced on May 19th that they will be working with National Yang-Ming University to promote the “Hua Yang Project” that will help to develop industry-academia cooperation. It is expected that this project will cultivate professionals who will work in the biomedical and information sciences and these individuals will span industry, academia, research and medical practice.

The Hua Yang Project will use artificial intelligence integration and innovative capabilities to help the development of new clinical applications. This project will be assisting the National Yang-Ming University Affiliated Hospital to create a structured and standardized clinical database. Such an innovative database will help research and development in the area of precision medicine. The goal of the project is also to promote Taiwan’s smart healthcare system and to lay a solid foundation for industry-university cooperation.

National Yang-Ming University is committed to cultivating interdisciplinary talents in biomedical information and AI. Through the Hua Yang Project, ASUS AICS’s top professionals with great talent will teach master classes at National Yang-Ming University. ASUS AICS will also set up AI applications for medical intern and doctoral student projects at National Yang-Ming University. This project will help with the development of cross-disciplinary talent starting from a core foundation, guiding then through to more advanced stage, until the real application stage is reached. The internship plan will teach its members how to think pragmatically when solving problems in industry. As for the doctoral plan, it will encourage excellent seed students at National Yang-Ming University to participate in the ASUS AICS AI as part of medical project teams and to conduct research projects with partnered hospitals. They will be tasked with creating customized clinical solutions and developing maximum commercial value from their research. ASUS AICS will offer core positions in smart medical services and these will include big data engineers, product managers and business development managers. Such positions will allow individuals trained as part of the Hua Yang Project to continue their career development in the AI field.

President Kou (left) emphasized that smart medical care is the inevitable direction of the future. vice president Huang at ASUS and superintendent of AICS said that “AI for Medicine” is an area where Taiwan can shine internationally in the era of global AI.

In addition to introducing the “ICD-10 coded AI recommendation engine” developed by ASUS AICS at the National Yang-Ming University Affiliated Hospital, this collaboration will also help to integrate the strengths of physician engineers working at the Faculty of Medicine into industry. Through cooperation with ASUS, National Yang-Ming University’s outstanding and energetic developments in the area of AI for medical research and development is expected to be able to target the bottlenecks that industry is suffering from. The follow-up research results from these projects will be used to assist the National Yang-Ming University Affiliated Hospital to create a structured and standardized precision medical database and promote a smart medical strategy for Taiwan.

Dr. Huang, vice president (global services) at ASUS and superintendent of AICS, pointed out that Taiwan is backed by powerful hardware manufacturers and has always led the world in the information foundry industry area. Entering the era of artificial intelligence, there is a need for software research and the development of talent in order to empower the hardware. The innovative value of combining software and hardware will shine in area of industrial applications. The “Hua Yang Project” research and development center that has been created by ASUS AICS and National Yang-Ming University sets its core research targets to be a range of different areas in the medical industry. The projects will use artificial intelligence and logic thinking to plan programming courses and research directions for the interns and the doctoral participants. The results of the project will later be applied clinically at the National Yang-Ming University Affiliated Hospital; this will cultivate cross-domain specialists in the fields of information science and biomedicine. Dr. Huang remarked, “We hope to use the Hua Yang Project as a starting point for demonstrating the fundamentals of talent cultivation. By so doing, we hope to promote Taiwan’s science and technology, as well as medical cooperation, in order to have the lead in the global smart medical industry chain.
