[2019/10/23] Professor Chen’s Headache Research Has Won the MOST ”Ta-You Wu Memorial Award”

Institute of Clinical Medicine, Professor Chen

Professor Chen from the Institute of Clinical Medicine has been investigating the pathophysiology of one of the most severe and dangerous headaches, namely “Reversible Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome, RCVS” and the well-known neurological disease “Migraine,” which causes the greatest amount of disability in the world. He hopes to change their treatment and would like to provide new possibilities in terms of treatments. His research findings were outstanding and have been rewarded the Ministry of Science and Technology “Ta-You Wu Memorial Award.”

Professor Chen from the Taipei Veterans General Hospital Department of Medical Research and Department of Neurology joined the TVGH-NYMU Headache Research Team in 2002. His research has two major focuses, reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome, RCVS, and migraine; he investigates their pathophysiology mechanisms. For RCVS, Professor Chen’s team has identified the disease’s clinical presentations and the course of the disease.

The team has also established a standard procedure for its identification and treatment, as well as developing guidelines for predicting its complications and long-term prognosis of affected patients. They also developed new imaging techniques that have helped to discover the disease's pathophysiology mechanism. The research quality and quantity is among the best in the world. In addition, their research into migraine has focused on establishing an animal model that will allow investigation of the pathophysiology mechanisms of the disease that will also help with the pinpointing of new treatment target. They have also intensified a specific migraine gene variant that is present in Taiwanese. This new gene variant provides a new orientation for their research and will greatly help with research in the future research.

Professor Chen’s research on RCVS and migraine was published in the journals JAMA Neurology and Brain, two of the most prestigious journals in neuroscience.
