[2019/08/05] Institute of Microbiology and Immunology Expands its Summer Course ”Microbial Biotechnology and Drug Discovery”

This year, National Yang Ming University held an internship program for Ton Duc Thang University that started on July 1st.


Due to a good response from the students, the summer course " Microbial Biotechnology and Drug Discovery" for foreign students was expanded this year and the course became a four-week internship program. In addition to more than 20 students from NYMU's sister school, this year 52 students from the Academy of Applied Sciences of Ton Duc Thang University in Vietnam were also welcomed. The students were at National Yang Ming University to study the latest advances in microbial technology and drug development.


The summer course "Microbial Technology and New Drug Development", which was headed by Dr. Shir-Ly Huang, Director of the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, has entered its third year of operation. With the Professors from the Institute of Microbiology and Immunology as the main teaching resource, this program covers various basic courses, an invitation to give presentations and a number of industrial visits. The summer internship program for Ton Duc Thang University has also had laboratory internships added to these events. The students were able to choose their teachers according to their research interests. They were divided into a number of groups and worked in the laboratories of various professors' laboratory. At the end of the four-week course, oral English reports and student ratings were given.

In addition, this year's summer internship program also invited high level academics and industry professionals to give special lectures. The speakers includes: Pro. Chen, Dean of the College of Bioscience, Pro. Wu, Dean of the School of Biomedical Engineering, Dr. Yang, CEO of Tai Yao Chemical Co., Ltd. General Manager Chen, Professor Li from the Indiana University School of Medicine, and Dr. Tuan from the Applied Science Academy of Ton Duc Thang University, Vietnam.


On the last day of the course, the students were invited to visit the 2019 Asia Biotechnology Conference (BIO Asia-Taiwan 2019), an internationally important large-scale biotechnology industry event that included international seminars, biotechnology exhibitions and biotechnology business opportunities. Such event provides a rare chance for students and teachers from both home and abroad.
