Professor Chung-Huang Yu Wins the 2014 Inno Design Tech Expo-International Invention and Design Gold Medal in Hong Kong

Professor Chung-Huang Yu and his team, from the Physical Therapy and Assistive Technology Department of National Yang-Ming University, participated in the 2014 Inno Design Tech Expo-International Invention and Design in Hong Kong, and won the gold medal for the invention "Body-worn Stride Rehabilitator".

Professor Yu's team found that many disabled patients (e.g. stroke, CP, PD, etc.) have difficulties to step on a desired location and present abnormal gaits. This is serious problem since about half a million people needed long term rehabilitation care due to stroke in Taiwan and they usually represent the abnormal gait pattern such as asymmetry gait, short step length and so on. The general practice nowadays is to paste parallel lines in front of the patient's walking way, but this method will be limited in specific space. The similar situation has been seen in Parkinson disease and cerebral palsy, too. The team would like to improve the training strategy and let users can perform gait practice in daily life, any environment, and without therapists' supervision.

Therefore they invented the "Body-worn Stride Rehabilitator" which can project a clear visual cue on the users waling path at right time at right place to indicate where the foot should be put on. It also elicits the users' intention to lift up their legs and results in better gait quality, and prevents the drop foot or shuffling gait. Because it is compact, body-worn, easy to use, and adjustable to users' ability, this invention can be used anywhere anytime and thus has great potential for tele gait rehabilitation.

Professor Yu is thankful for the help of many people from school. He is very glad to share this honor with everyone. In addition, he wishes to promote the assistive technology industry in Taiwan and develop more compact and practically useful assistive devices to help people with difficulties.
