Prof. Shih-Ann Chen Receives the 23rd Wang Ming-Ning Award

Professor Shih-Ann Chen, Faculty of Medicine at National Yang-Ming University, has received the 23rd Wang Min-Ning Award for his outstanding contribution to the development of medical science and technology to improve the health of people in Taiwan. Professor Chen is being recognized for his research on "Catheter ablation in treatment of atrial fibrillation".

Professor Chen found the junction between the pulmonary vein and the left atrium was the trigger site of atrial fibrillation on 1998, and also found the non-pulmonary vein trigger for the atrial fibrillation mechanism. He also investigated the catheter ablation technique for atrial fibrillation treatment. Before that, the atrial fibrillation patients need to take the antiarrhythmic drugs or the cardiac surgery to control atrial fibrillation.

Professor Chen and other world colleagues constructed the first and second version of the international guideline for atrial fibrillation ablation technique. In the recent years, this team also investigated the ablation techniques for different types of ventricular arrhythmias, including the electrical storm, cardiomyopathy and inheritary ventricular arrhythmias, and they were invited to teach this ablation technique in several countries.

Professor Chen appreciates the contribution by the team members, and the support from the family. He and his colleagues will continue to improve the treatment standard and patient care quality.
