Dr. Chung-Huang Yu Wins Second Prize at the 2013 National Instruments Graphical System Design Achievement Awards

Dr. Chung-Huang Yu, faculty of department of Physical Therapy and Assistive Technology of our university, and Hung-Jen Lai, an alumnus of our university who now works for Teh Lin Prosthetic & Orthopaedic Inc., had participated in the competition of NI (National Instruments) GSDAA (Graphical System Design Achievement Awards) in Taiwan with the project of "Ankle-Foot Prosthesis Fatigue Destructive Testing Equipment" and won the championship in 2012. Thereafter they stood for Taiwan to participate the 2013 NI GSDAA worldwide competition with 152 contenders from all over the world and won the second place in the Life Science Group.

"In order to produce high-quality prostheses and carry out the risk management of medical appliances, there is a need to test endurance of newly designed prostheses." said Dr. Yu. "And, it is required to follow the ISO10328 test standard. However, this new ISO22675 standard has very high strict test requirement, i.e. the prostheses under test need to withstand a complex trajectory and loading profile from heel-strike to toe-off."

Furthermore, the accuracy and reliability requirement of the control system need to be maintained for a continuous long lasting testing duration. In order to facilitate the testing demand and seek economic and reliable resolutions, the iMAD team lead by Yu helped the Deh-Lin Company to develop the testing device which was the first standard compliant equipment developed in Taiwan.

After winning the award, Dr. Yu said that he would like to share the honor with all the faculties and students of our university. Especially, he would like to thank the teachers from department of Physical Therapy and Assistive Technology for the support. This award exemplified that our university can train a student from medical background with industrial capability to make great contributions. Also, he hopes this can encourage all the teachers and students to bravely step into different research areas and attract more outstanding students to join our university.
