Prof. Shih-Ann Chen Wins the 2013 Eminent Cardiologist Award of Asia Pacific Heart Association

Prof. Shih-Ann Chen, Faculty of Medicine of National Yang-Ming University, has won the 2013 Eminent Cardiologist Award of the Asia Pacific Heart Association (APHA). ASSA 2013 (Annual Scientific Sessions of APHA 2013) organized by APHA was held in Singapore during April 19th-21st, 2013. More than 1000 Asia expert cardiologists attended the conference. Prof. Chen received this award with the main title of "Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation ".

Prof. Chen found the junction between the pulmonary vein and the left atrium was the trigger site of atrial fibrillation on 1998, and also found the non-pulmonary vein trigger for the atrial fibrillation mechanism. He also investigated the catheter ablation technique for atrial fibrillation treatment. Before that, the atrial fibrillation patients need to take the antiarrhythmic drugs or the cardiac surgery to control atrial fibrillation.

Prof. Chen and other world colleagues constructed the first and second version of the international guideline for atrial fibrillation ablation technique. In the recent years, this team also investigated the ablation techniques for different types of ventricular arrhythmias, including the electrical storm, cardiomyopathy and inheritary ventricular arrhythmias, and they were invited to teach this ablation technique in several countries.

Prof. Chen appreciates the contribution by the team members, and the support from the family. He and his colleagues will continue to improve the treatment standard and patient care quality.
