Prof. Hsei-Wei Wang received the 2012 Academia Sinica Research Award for Junior Research Investigators.

Dr. Hsei-Wei Wang, Professor of Institute of Microbiology and Immunology, was selected to receive this year's Academia Sinica Research Award for Junior Research Investigators (Life Science Division). This Award encourages junior researchers in Taiwan to publish papers of major contribution in their research fields, and only 5 awards in each division (Mathematics and Physical Sciences, Life Science, Humanities and Social Sciences) are available on a national level in Taiwan that recognized scholars early in their careers. The award has been pursued by many young academics in Taiwan and is perceived as a great honor. All submissions underwent a stringent review procedure including pre-screening, initial review, 2nd stage review, and a final review. On June 5, 2012, an award ceremony was hosted at the Academia Sinica.

Professor Hsei-Wei Wang has many specialties. He combines bioinformatics and molecular biology for studying cancer and has fruitful results. In his papers there are two attractive contributions: he discovered that the KSHV (Karposi's sarcoma-associated herpes virus) manipulates host microRNAs expression and mRNA splicing for inducing endothelial cell motility. These findings help us to better understand cancer angiogenesis. In addition, Professor Wang identified that in human colorectal cancer, Snail transcription factor regulates expression of IL-8, an pro-inflammatory cytokine, and other genes to induce cancer stem cell activities. Strategies that disrupt this Snail-IL8 axis might be developed to block tumor formation by cancer stem cells. Professor Wang's research has major impact on not only basic science, but also on clinical applications by raising a new possibility to cure colon cancer.

Congratulations on Professor Hsei-Wei Wang's achievement!
