Prof. Françoise Barré-Sinouss visited Our School

Prof. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi, the 2008 Nobel Laureate in Medicine or Physiology, gave an academic lecture at National Yang-Ming University (NYMU) on October 4th, 2010. Prof. Barré-Sinoussi is the co-discoverer of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS. She visited Taiwan on behalf of the honorable invitation of Sayling Wen Lectureship of Academic Excellence of University System of Taiwan (UST). NYMU is the first stop of the Professor's visit.

The lecture delivered by Prof. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi to NYMU was titled "HIV a discovery highlighting the global benefit of translational research". Nearly 400 participants came to share the master's invaluable knowledge and the journey of her research. The speech was about the discovery of HIV to the AIDS' influences and its prevention in poor areas in the world. Prof. Barré-Sinoussi also shared her experiences with students on how to become a successful scientist.

Accompanied by Prof. Kung-Yee Liang - the president of NYMU and Prof. Yan-Hwa Wu Lee - the president of UST, Prof. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi held the first press conference in Taiwan. In the conference, Prof. Barré-Sinoussi said that she was pleased to know that Taiwan is able to provide the medical treatment to all AIDS patients locally. She also appealed that all AIDS patients should receive the treatment. According to her statistics, the AIDS patients who received the medical treatment could reduce the mortality rate to over 85%. In the past 6 years, only about 40% AIDS patients received the treatment in the world.

We hope that the visit of Prof. Françoise Barré-Sinoussi will raise the attention of our society in preventing and caring the AIDS.
